# B2B Ecommerce

B2B buyers are people.

So they expect the same digital experience they get as consumers — and then a whole layer of functionality on top of it. Custom pricing by account, quote workflows, purchase order support, account hierarchies, gated content, approval chains, net terms.

We’ve been building B2B ecommerce sites for nearly two decades. We know which features matter, how to implement them cleanly on modern platforms, and how to do it without turning your codebase into a maintenance nightmare.

**This is for you if:**

- You’re running B2B operations on a platform configured for B2C — and the friction is visible to your customers.
- Your sales team is manually handling workflows that should be automated: quotes, custom pricing, account management.
- You’re moving your B2B sales online for the first time and need the digital experience to match the complexity of your real-world relationships.

**What you’ll get from this:**

- A full audit of your B2B requirements mapped against your platform’s native capabilities.
- Implementation of the B2B feature set your buyers actually need: custom pricing, quote flows, account hierarchies, PO support.
- Clean, documented configuration that your team can manage and extend.
- A buyer experience that makes your sales team’s life easier, not harder.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Our sales team handles quotes manually. Why automate that? Two reasons: speed (most B2B buyers compare 3+ vendors, and the slow quote loses) and consistency (manual quotes drift, get re-priced, and create friction with returning buyers). Automation doesn’t replace the salesperson; it removes the parts of the job they hate. Read [Fixing B2B eCommerce](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/blog/fixing-b2b-ecommerce/) and [The End of B2B eCommerce Design as We Know It](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/blog/the-end-of-b2b-ecommerce-design-as-we-know-it/) for the longer thesis.

We're on Shopify but B2B is killing us. Should we switch?Maybe. Shopify B2B has matured, but specific gaps remain (complex account hierarchies, gated catalogs by buyer, EDI flows). We’d run [Platform Selection & Evaluation](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/services/platform-selection-evaluation/) before recommending the switch; sometimes the right move is staying and adding the missing pieces, sometimes it’s [BigCommerce](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/services/bigcommerce-design-development/) or another B2B-native platform.

Do you handle integrations with our ERP?Yes. ERP integration is usually the largest hidden complexity in B2B ecommerce: real-time pricing, inventory, account hierarchy sync, order writeback. We’ve integrated with NetSuite, SAP, Sage, Microsoft Dynamics, and several smaller ERPs. Edge cases are where the work actually is.

How is B2B different from B2C ecommerce, technically?Pricing is dynamic per buyer, not per catalog. Catalog visibility is gated by account, not public. Checkout includes POs and net terms, not just credit cards. Account structures have parent/child relationships. Approval chains exist between buyer and authorizer. None of these are theoretical: they break the standard B2C site model when bolted on.

Can you help with the design too, or only the technical side? Both: we handle the design and the technical build, often inside the same engagement. B2B design has its own logic (dense product information, account dashboards, reorder flows, PDF spec sheet downloads, RFQ buttons) and treating it like a B2C theme is how portals end up unusable. When it makes sense, we run [UX/UI Design](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/services/ux-ui-design/) as part of the same team and timeline.

Show me a real example. The clearest ones: [EGOB2B](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/case-studies/ego/) (Magento to BigCommerce with a full B2B portal), [IGT Microelectronics](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/case-studies/igt-microelectronics/) (Prestashop to BigCommerce), plus [W‑Systems](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/case-studies/wsystems/), [Sekonic](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/case-studies/sekonic/), and [Benro](https://www.takefortytwo.com/en/case-studies/benro/). Different industries and scales, same challenge shape: custom pricing, account hierarchies, and buyers who expect the portal to work like their job depends on it. Each case study details what was built and why.
